Craving raw oysters? They say once smitten, always looking for the next great oyster-on-the-half shell-fix.
Fish House Oyster Bar has three locations to savor fresh oysters sourced from around the world, year-round. Chilled white wines and beers also await. Their third location, Meguro, is less than a two-minute walk from the station.
Now Meguro is not exactly known as a gourmet destination; however, you definitely smell food wafting around the station. Meguro is home to one of the most celebrated festivals in Tokyo, that is, if you love fish. Every September, its Sanma Matsuri, or pacific saury fish festival, attracts a line of roughly 20,000 people hungering for about 6,000 charcoal-grilled fish.
There are countless casual eateries of all variations near the station, especially along the pair of sloping streets toward Meguro River called Gonnosuke Zaka. Fish House Oyster Bar is an easy stroll from the west exit of the station towards Ebisu.
Compared to the other two locations, the Meguro Fish House Oyster Bar has a more casual atmosphere, likened to your friendly pub. Meguro’s location beckons you with ice-cold beer. It is the kind of place you would frequent with colleagues after work when the usual izakaya or yakitori joint won’t do. It’s a terrific change of pace, mood, scene, and of course, offerings, like the oyster platter featuring a smattering of oysters from around the world.
What separates this place from so many eateries in Meguro and other oyster bars in Tokyo, is simply their passion for oysters. The staff constantly sample and taste oysters sourced from around the world and they put in the time, energy, and air-mileage to meet producers. Toshihiro Matsushita, owner of the three oyster bars and his long time partner, Taiu Hayashi, managing this location, traveled to Boston to visit the oldest oyster bar in the U.S. From the newest of us to taste oysters or those who’ve also travelled the globe and seven seas, tasting your way through oyster bars, or even catching your own, this is the place to dine on these tasty bivalve mollusks.
The very experienced Chef Katsumi Yamamoto attends to preparing the raw oysters, manning the grill for the cooked oysters, and preparing other delectable seafood dishes such as whelk, fish terrine, paella and smoked trout. The restaurant’s homemade focaccia is served alongside many of their enticing dishes.
Fish House Oyster Bar draws a passionate crowd, many more than just you and your colleagues or friends. During weekdays, this Fish House Oyster Bar attracts many salary men and OLs (office ladies). Weekend meals largely attract a more shi-shi, glamorous crowd; many living in nearby Choujamaru stop in for their cool fix of oysters on the shell, paella, or the restaurant’s New England -style clam chowder. Whether raw or grilled, enjoy.
