Kagurazaka has many narrow backstreets, stone flagged alleys and stairways branching out from the main street, or more accurately the main slope. You walk into them and every time you make a turn, you see and feel something new and different. From Iidabashi station, going up on the slope, you will walk into a relatively relaxed section with Atamiya which is a sento, public bath, serving the local community since before World War II. The section also has an old fruit shop along with other shops and restaurants that one cannot even tell how long have been there. Kifu is situated in this slightly mysterious section of Kagurazaka.
And, Kifu itself somehow has a mysterious aura. Even though it has a small sign, it is a large black box which makes you wonder how you can go in. You look carefully and find a part of the black wall which can be opened. Then you will see a wooden door inside.
Interestingly, inside the door the space is filled with a very authentic Japanese atmosphere. It is a small space with seats along the counter and two private dining rooms. However, as they are laid out very efficiently, you will feel the space is larger than it actually is. While it is simple, the color scheme of the space ensures that you will not feel claustrophobic.
Please be encouraged to try the 10,000 yen Omakase course, if you have not been there as yet. The quality of ingredients used and volume of the course is satisfying. Chef Tateishi’s cooking philosophy is very simple; do not kill the characteristics of the ingredients. He daily amends the dishes and ingredients in the set course. He especially takes pride in his owan; a combination of soup, meat and steamed rice. You can select a type of meat. However, quite often, many customers end up ordering more than one meat dish.
When you actually dine here, you might wonder if there are too many service staff for such a small dining space. They look after you and your guests very well with true hospitality. In fact, you might want to consider using this place to pamper your customers and clients.
Kifu means time passing by slowly. After dinner at this place, you will feel a sense of gratification for having enjoyed a nice slow dinner even though you might have to live life in the busy fast lane of Tokyo.
