礼華（Raika）  新宿御苑前/中華（ShinjukuGyoenmae/Chinese）

新宿御苑のすぐ脇、幅が広い石畳調の歩道、柵越しの御苑の緑、そしてその上に広がる空によって、都会のど真中にいることを忘れさせてくれる不思議な開放感溢れる一本道がある。「礼華（らいか）」はその1本道沿い、通りの開放感がそのまま溢れるお店である。

「開放感が溢れる」と言っても、特別に天井が高いとか、吹き抜けがある　というわけではない。茶色とオフホワイトをベースとした、モダンな雰囲気の中に落ち着きが感じられるテーブル席、緑に囲まれたテラス席、そしてマダムをはじめとするスタッフ達の丁寧だが大仰ではないサービスが、このレストランならではの居心地の良さを作っている。

新山シェフの料理は、大きく括ると「ヌーベルシノワ」。だが、1皿にしっかりとしたボリュームがありながらも、多くの皿が進む絶妙な味わい、そして幅広いメニュー構成は、確かな基本に「筑紫樓」など数々の有名店での経験をプラスしたシェフのオリジナルである。お薦めは、6,000円で7品、8,000円で8品を楽しめるコース。いわゆるプリフィクススタイルだが、特徴は、その選択肢が非常に豊富なこと。しかも、「このメニューを食べたい。でも、￥500か…」、「こっちは、＋￥1,000？」ということは一切なく、どちらのコースを選んでも、このレストランの魅力を堪能することが出来る。

新宿は、もの凄く沢山の「飲食店」があるものの、落ち着いて静かに食事を楽しめる店を探すには、結構苦労するエリア。最寄駅は「新宿御苑前」だが、上記1本道を利用した往復を含めて「新宿のおいしいお店」として、是非リストに入れて頂きたいレストランである。もちろん、このお店を目指してわざわざ新宿を訪れる価値あり である。

In the right middle of Tokyo, there is a quiet street right by Shinjuku Gyoen Park. The combination of its wide sidewalk, the greenery of the park and the blue sky will have you feeling relaxed and comfortable, in fact temporarily oblivious to the fact that you are in Shinjuku, the busiest district of Tokyo. In Raika, located on this street, you feel even more relaxed and comfortable.

However, this does not mean Raika has high ceilings or a large patio. It is a cozy restaurant, which can accommodate only 40 guests or so. What make this small place special are the tables placed outside by the street and the creative interior filled with antique items placed unpretentiously about the modern dining room toned with off-white and brown colors. Mrs. Niiyama, along with her wait staff, ensures you enjoy the atmosphere, in addition to the fine cuisine they serve.

Chef Niiyama's cuisine could be categorized as nouveau Chinois. However, every dish he creates is substantial but not heavy. This allows you to enjoy a wide range of dishes. They are all created based on his experience in working for renowned Chinese restaurants such as Tsukushirou. Especially recommended are two set course menus of 6,000 yen and 8,000 yen featuring 7 and 8 dishes respectively.These set course menus provide you with a very wide range of choices.

The very busy Shinjuku area has a countless number of restaurants. However, it is not easy to locate a place at which you can relax and savor the moment and food. While Shinjuku might be somewhat overwhelming as area of the city, Raika is a restaurant worth going seeking out. The nearest station to Raika is Shinjukugyoenmae on the Marunouchi subway line. From there you can enjoy walking down the street by the park to Raika.
